I guess I need to print out the manual and just give it some time. I am only 50% there as some issues are yet for me to figure out. I just spent a long weekend trying to see if I could render an orch score a certain way with Lilypond.

On a side note, my compositions are published by a very well-known publisher of pedagogical music here in the United States. Finale and Sibelius both assume a rather bland, catch-all visual style. James's comment on the quality of the final product is also worth mentioning. I should also say that no notation program is as easy as "play it in, then print it out." Contrapuntal lines are usually interpreted incorrectly, and rhythms often come out looking a bit strange. Both Sibelius and Finale have downloadable demo versions, and Lilypond is free. (And if I don't upgrade, then I can't read files made with the newer version.) Sibelius also suffers from this, but not as badly.įor most people, it's a matter of personal preference. So if I upgrade to the latest version, nobody using an earlier version can read my files. The main reason I quit using Finale is that they upgrade the software every year and the file formats are not backwards compatible. I usually enter notes with the mouse, but entry from a keyboard works very easily under many circumstances. I currently use Sibelius, mostly because I like the feel of its WYSIWYG interface. I agree that their output doesn't quite match Lilypond's elegance, but they do produce easily readable scores and are quite configurable (assuming you get the full versions of each.) Having used Finale and Sibelius, they each seem about equally able. There are a few third-party interfaces available, but they're all a bit limited. Liliypond doesn't have much of an interface.
